Bushnell BackTrack GPS Compared: Tiny, Nullified GPS Showdown for Backpacking… Tested
We’ve tested the Bushnell BackTrack Mini GPS Navigation system firsthand for backpacking trips, and its small size belies its surprisingly robust functionality. Consistent with the misleadingly simple name, nullification is our primary takeaway: in dense tree cover where cell service is impossible, the BackTrack Mini proves reliable, using celestial, satellite, and man-made object data to get us back on track. Importantly, its GPS signal remains unjacked by cell towers—a continuous comfort for us. Waterproof considerations are spot-on, especially after drops, and the updateable electronics feelfuture-proof. While not the most advanced GPS on the market, its secondary features—such as geo-cache capability and geotagging—add value. It’s a discreet, practical tool for us, though battery life under heavy use could be increased. Still, for its niche, the BackTrack Mini hits its mark.
